Sector Specialist vs. Generalist

A sector specialist investor or analyst focuses exclusively on one industry vertical (e.g., technology, healthcare, or energy), while a generalist covers multiple sectors. IR targeting strategy typically prioritizes sector specialists for deep conviction positions and generalists for broader portfolio diversification.

SEDAR (System for Electronic Document Analysis and Retrieval)

The Canadian equivalent of the SEC’s EDGAR system — the electronic filing platform used by Canadian public companies to submit required regulatory disclosures, including annual reports, quarterly financials, AIFs, proxy circulars, and material change reports.

Sell-Side Analyst

An analyst employed by an investment bank or brokerage firm who publishes research reports — including financial models, price targets, and investment ratings — distributed to the firm’s institutional investor clients. Sell-side coverage drives investor awareness and is a key objective of analyst targeting in IR.

Sensitive Communication Challenge

A high-stakes communications situation — such as an earnings miss, regulatory investigation, leadership change, or strategic pivot — where the risk of misinterpretation, negative media coverage, or investor backlash is elevated and requires careful, deliberate messaging.

Shareholder Activism

A strategy in which an investor acquires a meaningful stake in a public company and uses that ownership position to advocate for changes — including to board composition, capital allocation, strategy, or management — through private engagement or public campaigns.

Shareholder Identification

The process of determining the beneficial owners of a company’s shares — including those held through intermediaries such as brokers, custodians, and nominees — using regulatory filings, proxy solicitor outreach, and shareholder analytics platforms.

Shareholder Letter

A leadership letter — typically from the CEO or Chairman — included in the annual report or proxy circular that summarizes performance, communicates strategic priorities, and speaks directly to shareholders about the company’s progress and outlook.

Social Media Calendar

A planned editorial schedule that maps out social media posts, themes, campaign timelines, and content formats across owned channels — ensuring consistent, timely, and strategic communications throughout the year.

Social Media Management

The planning, creation, publishing, and monitoring of social media content across platforms such as LinkedIn, X (Twitter), and YouTube to support investor visibility, brand presence, and stakeholder engagement.

SPAC (Special Purpose Acquisition Company)

A publicly listed shell company created for the sole purpose of raising capital through an IPO and then merging with a private company to take it public — offering an alternative to the traditional IPO process. SPAC mergers require active IR engagement to communicate the transaction rationale and support post-merger investor retention.
